Kingfishers Open Water Season begins on Monday 7th May at Wykeham
Kingfishers Open Water season got off to a flying start on Monday 7th May. As it was a Bank Holiday it was of course very cold, overcast and windy but by 6.15pm it had at least stopped raining!
12 swimmers took to the water a chilly 14 degrees to add to the biting wind. The old faithful’s Dave Morgan and Jonny Lucas were there running in from the side and it has to be said showing off just a little. Jane Sedman, Erin Hope, Savannah McKenzie and Louise Scupham were back following their success at Castle Foot swims last year.
Sam Sedman came down for his 6th or 7th season and canoed at first for the young first timers then got in and swam his laps! We then had 5 new open water swimmers who proved that they had what it takes to brave the waters of Wykeham Lakes, Fraser Haddington a Filey Club swimmer and triathlete flew round the circuits up amongst the seasoned swimmers, an amazing achievement for a “first timer”
Finally we had 4 very worried looking pool swimmers, all very fast and competent in the balmy waters of the indoor pool, looking to try something new. Kennedy Webster, Aaron Gilson, Melissa Fyfebar and Isobel Metcalfe all surpassed everyone’s expectations so early in the season in Arctic conditions by getting in with no fuss at all and swimming really well. A truly magnificent start to their hopefully, long and fulfilling open water career.
Big thanks to Nico Marrone and Sam Sedman for canoeing, Phil Dickinson and Robyn Keech for Lifeguarding and manning the safety boat and Amanda Lee for keeping a good head count!.
Any club member is welcome to come along and “have a go” as long as they can swim 1 mile competently and have a good sense of humour. See you next Monday 6.15pm J
