Scarborough’s Kingfishers Swimming Club is celebrating an outstanding season after 15 of its young swimmers qualified for the prestigious North Eastern Regional Long Course Championships, with one swimmer returning home with a silver medal and many others achieving personal best performances against some of the strongest competition in the country. The North Eastern Regional Championships bring together the best swimmers from across Yorkshire, the Humber, Northumberland and Durham, making qualification an achievement in itself. For Kingfishers, however, simply qualifying was only the beginning.
Over three weekends of competition, Kingfishers swimmers consistently rose to the occasion, producing a string of personal bests, heat wins and finalist appearances.
Among the standout performers was Genie, who enjoyed an exceptional championship campaign. After reaching multiple finals, including the 100m backstroke, 50m breaststroke, 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke, she capped off a remarkable competition by claiming the silver medal in the 50-metre butterfly final.
The championships began in impressive fashion, with Megan, Genie and Orla all recording personal best times during the opening session. Both Genie and Orla went on to secure finals places, with Genie finishing fifth in the 100m backstroke and Orla seventh in the 50m breaststroke.
The momentum continued throughout the competition. George, Sophie, Nati, Genie and Orla all produced strong performances and significant personal bests, with further finals appearances secured. Orla reached the 100m breaststroke final, while Genie qualified for the 50m freestyle final, demonstrating the depth of talent within the Kingfishers squad.
The second regional weekend saw further success for Rhys and Harriet, with Rhys recording new personal bests in both the 200m Individual Medley and 100m Freestyle, including winning his heat in the 200m IM.
Kingfishers swimmers continued to impress during the final weekend of competition. Orla finished seventh in the 200m breaststroke final, while Genie secured fifth place in the 50m backstroke final before going on to earn her silver medal in the 50m butterfly.
Throughout the championships, swimmers from the club consistently lowered their personal best times, highlighting the progress being made across all age groups. Coaches were particularly pleased to see swimmers delivering their best performances when it mattered most on the regional stage.
The success reflects years of work within the club’s development pathway. Every swimmer representing Kingfishers at the championships has progressed through the club’s own coaching programme, developing their skills through the various squads under the guidance of a dedicated coaching team.
Coach Tom Wilkinson said “To have 15 swimmers qualify for the North Eastern Regional Championships is an incredible achievement and demonstrates the strength of the pathway we have built at Kingfishers. We place a huge emphasis on technique and long-term development, and it is fantastic to see so many swimmers achieving personal bests and reaching regional finals.”
The achievements have been celebrated throughout the club, with coaches, volunteers, parents and swimmers all playing a role in the success.
With the long-course season now complete for Kingfishers, attention turns to the Winter Yorkshire Championships and Winter North Eastern Championships. Following such an impressive regional campaign, and with so many swimmers continuing to improve and achieve new personal bests, Kingfishers Swimming Club looks forward to building on this success and providing even more opportunities for young swimmers to compete at the highest levels.
For a club that prides itself on developing local talent, the future looks exceptionally bright, and the performances at this year’s North Eastern Regional Championships have once again shown that Scarborough’s Kingfishers can compete with the very best in the region.
