Castlefoot Swim

TWO SUCCESSFULL CASTLEFOOT SWIMS

Mary-Beth Hebron and Savannah Mackenzie completed two successful Castlefoot Swims on Wednesday 17 August in 52 minutes 37secs and 52 mins 33 secs respectively. They entered the water at the steps outside the Royal Albert Cafe at 5pm and the team mates swam together all the way round on a lovely sunny evening. The water was relatively calm but did get a “wee bit choppy” behind the Luna Park according to the boat crews, this didn’t faze either of the girls who just ploughed on and showed true grit and determination. This swim is the culmination of a lot of hard work from both girls both in the pool and at Wykeham Lakes each Monday Evening. Congratulations to you both.
I feel at this point I must give full credit to the boat crews, open water swimming is in a completely different catagory to pool swimming when it comes to Safety and Kingfishers has always excelled at looking after their swimmers and tonight was no exception. For our regular boatman Phil Dickinson and his trusty mate Kev Sykes the swim started at 1.30 in the afternoon when they went out to Wykeham to load up the boat and bring it into town, they then battled with tourists and random dafties who came out in the sunshine to get down to the harbour and secure a mooring, which was no mean feat on this occasion as a new Harbourmaster is in place, and he is not yet used to our desire to swim roud the headland at short notice. All boat crews were on the pier for 4pm,
The Kingfishers boat contained Phil, Kev and Jonny Lucas and the second boat was supplied by Scarborough Sub Aqua Club and was manned by Barry Samples, Pete Bridgewood and David Morgan. The last piece of the safety cover much to the amusement of everyone on the Marine Drive and at The Albert Cafe came in the shape of Gav Kerrigan, he carried his canoe from the top of the cliffs down, winding his way like a tortoise down the paths and then slid down the steps to launch as there was no beach! The canoe is really important in addition to the two boats as it can get so much closer to the swimmers.
I’m sorry to seem to go on a bit about the crews, but without them there is no open water section and I feel it is really important that everyone is aware of what preparation is involved before hand to get these swims off the ground.

5th End of Season A/B Graded Meet Report

Times tumble and PB’s galore are achieved during the two day City of Bradford end of season A & B Gala held at Shipley. Due to a mix up with the booking of the pool the sessions started at 1pm on Saturday with an evening session following, which was a new experience for our swimmers.

Isobel Metcalfe

As a newcomer to the Open Meet Squad Isobel Metcalfe was warmly welcomed by the Kingfishers Team for her races, namely the 100m freestyle and the 50m & 100m Breastroke. Isobel swam well and achieved PB’s in all her races. Isobel’s mission now (should she want to accept it) will be to tackle a full 2 days Open meet.

Katie Golding

Katie went to Shipley with an aim to bag a Yorkshire time. After knocking over 4 seconds off both her 100m Free and 100m Back, 1.5 seconds off her 50m Free and a mammoth 11seconds off her 200m Freestyle, Katie achieved Yorkshire qualification in the 200IM

Louise Scupham

Louise took the Squad through their warm up routine and marshalled the swim up/down pool to ensure that all the swimmers were ready to race.

In the pool, Louise PB’d in the 100m free and won 6 medals. What a haul!

Chloe Simmons

Chloe had set herself a mission this weekend; she wanted to avenge her 200m Breastroke disqualification in the Harrogate Open in May which had given her an ’unofficial time’ of 3.14.00 but maintained her actual time at 3.24.00. Chloe swam a very tactical race and recorded a time of 3.10.75 – a PB of nearly 14 seconds and 1.5 seconds of a coveted NE time.

Emily Corcoran

This was only Emily’s 2nd Open Meet of this year following the Hull Open Meet at the start of the month. Starting at the evening session with the 50m Freestyle, followed later by the 200m Freestyle Emily PB’d in both events.

On Sunday Emily knocked a massive 23.84 seconds off her 200m backstroke, confirming a return to fitness.

Amy Corcoran

Amy entered the same races as her sister, Emily. Her 50m Freestyle yielded a 3.5 second PB, with her 200m Freestyle taking a whopping 21 seconds off at 3.00.60 and finally a 3.14.00 in the 200 backstroke.

Paige Cusworth

Paige was in Shipley for Saturday only and made the most of her time in the pool. In the 100m Freestyle a 3second PB of 1.11.54 was followed by a 4 second PB in the 100m Backstroke. This shows the value of carefully picking races to achieve times.

Euan Topley

Despite looking mightily unimpressed by being entered in the 200m Breastroke, Euan started his weekend with a near 8second PB. He then knocked a gargantuan 16 seconds of his 200IM with a time of 3.00.49. Euan continued to PB in the 200m Backstroke, 100m freestyle, 100m backstroke, 100m Breastroke before finishing the weekend with a 15 second PB in the 200m freestyle.

Bandon Lino

Juan Carlos had once again ensured that ‘no race was left unswimmed’ for Brandon.

The Spring Yorkshire Galas 

The winter of the 2010 swimming year had seen the Kingfishers S.C. going through a transition. The talented youngsters at the club were not yet old enough to compete in the Yorkshires (although a few already had the times to do so) and injury to swimmers had left this years attendance at the 50m Spring Yorkshire Championships down on the previous years. 

Gala 2 held at the John Charles Centre in South Leeds. On Saturday 26th February Chloe Simmons competed in the 11/15 yrs 200m Breastroke. Chloe achieved a personal best of 2.36.53 with a finishing place of 13th On the Sunday Chloe was joined by Louise Scupham for the Girls 11-15yrs Breastroke. Yet again the racing was fast and tough with both of the Kingfisher swimmers excelling. 13years old Louise swam a very creditable 1.30.78 to finish 22nd whilst Chloe PB’d at long course with 1.36.82 for a 19th place. Gala 3 The 50m Sprints – Ponds Forge – Sheffield The Spring Sprints are always the highlight of the swim year with parents. Quite often it’s the first swim at a large regional event that the younger swimmers will make. This year it was Euan Topley (50m freestyle) and Charlotte Morris (50m Fly) who made their debuts. Both swimmers were unfazed by the 50m pool and were determined to do well. Swimming in a large regional meet in an unfamiliar 50m poll can be intimidating, but both swimmers recorded good times and enjoyed the swims. In the 50m Breastroke Ceri Boddy (at her 2nd Yorkshires) achieved a top 20 finish with a time of 46.88 in the 10years old and Chloe Simmons 14th with 43.58 in the 11 year old race. Chloe also raced in the 50m backstroke with Paige Cusworth also in the 13year old event. Both competed well and came in at their entry times.

It is worth pointing out that although Sheffield may seem a long way to go for just the one or two races that last under a minute, the experience gained for the swimmers is immeasurable. They are swimming in a pool where international stars compete, using the same starting blocks and swimming under the full set of Officials. The balconies are full with parents and spectators and before each race a giant scoreboard lights up with the 10 swimmers names who are competing in the heat. The camaraderie is immediately evident with all swimmers cheering there fellow club members on. Many swimmers kick on significantly after attending the Yorkshires and can see that their training regime is reaping rewards.  The race is on to get the times for the Autumn Yorkshires, so get to the Open Meets and get your qualifying times.

Kingfishers Storm Harrogate

Kingfishers have a storming Harrogate A & B gala.  Swimmers included Ceri Boddy, Savannah Snowball, Morgan Wilson, Chloe Simmons, Harriet Longley, Brandon Lino, Louise Scupham and Paige Cusworth.

The medal tally was impressive with:

1 speeding ticket, 3 Golds, 4 Silvers and 2 Bronze

Vicky Moore

Vicky Moor was a member of Kingfisher Swimming club some years ago. As a young swimmer, she preferred breaststroke above all other swimming strokes. Tragically on the 24th March 1986 aged just 13yrs old she died from Reyes Syndrome. Each year a gala is held in her memory.
