Video Technology Boosts Swimmer Development

Video Technology Boosts Swimmer Development

Kingfishers Swimming Club is proud to announce the introduction of advanced video analysis into its training program. Filming during recent sessions is part of a new initiative designed to give swimmers detailed, personalised feedback to further refine their technique and performance.
All recorded footage is used exclusively by coaching staff in consultation with the athletes. This cutting-edge approach allows coaches and swimmers to analyse technique closely, identify key areas for improvement, and build on individual strengths — supporting ongoing growth and development
While verbal feedback remains a key part of coaching, visual analysis allows swimmers to see their technique in action — deepening their understanding and making it easier to apply targeted changes. Footage can also be shared via email with swimmers and parents to review at home.
“The introduction of filming sessions has added a whole new dimension to our coaching,” said Zoe Naylor, Kingfishers Head Coach. “When swimmers can actually see their technique in action alongside feedback from their coach, it becomes so much more meaningful. We’re already seeing progress and greater confidence across the squad.”
This exciting development would not have been possible without the generous support of Rowntree Lodge Cafe, who have kindly sponsored the filming kit. The club is extremely grateful for their contribution to helping our swimmers reach their full potential.

Kingfishers Swimming Club – Swim The Castle Foot

Kingfishers Club Chair returns to swim the Castle Foot after 46 years

On Friday 29th August 2025, five members of Kingfishers Swimming Club’s open water squad completed the local Castle Foot Swim; Club Chair Kath Minghella doing so 46 years since her first successful swim at the age of 14, all swimming from the North Bay around to the South Bay.
The start of the swim was overseen by club president Maureen Dickinson. At 6pm the swimmers entered the water at the steps on the beach tucked under the castle where the Royal Albert Cafe once stood, and, swam all the way round on a lovely sunny but breezy evening. The water was relatively calm compared with how rough it had been all day! This swim is the culmination of a lot of hard work from Kath Minghella, Sarah Noble, Adam Thomas, Jane Sedman and Matt Smallwood; training in the pool, at Wykeham Lakes and in the sea. The swimmers finished in front of the lifeboat in cracking times
Sarah Nobel 44 minutes 44 seconds
Adam Thomas 45 minutes 36 seconds
Matt Smallwood 51 minutes 22 seconds
Kath Minghella 52 minutes 7 seconds
Jane Sedman – (Breaststroke) 1 hour 2 minutes 7 seconds
Paula Ambury, Open Water Lead for Kingfishers, said “it’s always a team effort and privilege to help swimmers complete swims, the Castle Foot is the first of the local swims we do, moving onto Scalby mills to the Spa and Filey to Scarborough as they progress. As always credit must be given to the boat crew and kayak support. Steve, John, Alex, Chloe are all proficient sea kayakers and keep the swimmers safe and on the right line close in, under the castle headland as fishing boats in years gone by couldn’t do. Nick Gough and the club officials on local boat Skylark are there to oversee all the swimmers and be the rescue boat if necessary. Without the support from these volunteers’ swims like this can not go ahead with the level of safety and success Kingfishers prides itself on”
Locals have been swimming around the castle headland and have had their swims recorded since the 1940s. Swimmers enter the water usually on the north side and once upon a time through the tunnel called the Lady Dock (under where the Albert Café used to stand). The
tunnel was filled in when the sea defences were put in place. The swim finishes on the south side when they can stand in front of the lifeboat station.

2025 Club Championships held at Scarborough Sports Village on Sunday 29 June

Our Club Championships will be held at Scarborough Sports Village on Sunday 29 June 2025.

Please note there will be no training on this date.
Our Championships will be a Level 4 licensed meet this year which means that all times gained will count as official ranked Swim England times (for swimmers age 9 and over and registered as SE Club Compete). The Yorkshire Championships accept Level 4 meet qualifying times.  Swimmers who are age 9 and above, currently  registered as club train and would like to have their times count as official ranked times please get in touch with the club secretary to upgrade the SE membership to club compete.
What races can I enter?
Our Championships have been designed for all our training groups from Development through to Masters.  It only costs £5 per person to enter as many races as you want.
With the exception of the 25m Splash and Dash Freestyle (any stroke) event which is aimed at everyone, the 25m distance events are aimed more at swimmers in Development training groups who may be competing for the first time or not had much previous competition experience.
The 100m and 200m events are aimed more toward our Performance and Masters training group swimmers.
There are some events which are only open to swim members in specific training groups – this is so that we can guide members to the events most suited to them and complete all races within the allocated pool time available to us. Where there are restrictions, these are clearly marked on the programme.
The Championships include some fun events which are an opportunity for all swimmers to work together, particularly with the relay events, across different training groups and ages – we are all one big team at the end of the day and we want everyone to feel that.
How to enter
Entries can be made via Swim Manager from early June 2025. Ages will be age on the date of the Championships, 29 June 2025. If you’re not sure about the distances to enter or need advice please just ask.
Start, and warm-up times are listed on the Event Schedule page with more information about the events.
Winners and awards
There will be 3 lots of final winners -1st, 2nd and 3rd placings – from the 3 different  training groups: Development, Performance and Masters. Winners will be determined by fastest times from these training groups and the following age groupings from all heats – 7 yrs, 8 yrs, 9 yrs, 10 yrs, 11 yrs, 12 yrs, 13 yrs, 14y rs, 15 yrs, 16-24 yrs, 25-29 yrs, 30–39 yrs, 40-49 yrs, 50+ yrs. All winners will be heat declared (there will be no ‘finals’). Winners will be announced during the Championships shortly after each event and available on the live results page.  Medals and awards will be available from the awards table poolside.
There will be two prizes for Top Swimmer (Open/Male and Female) awarded to those swimmers, across all training groups, who have gained the most Championship points – the more events you enter, the better chance you stand of gaining those all important points for these awards.
And finally
Winning is always good but the main objective of our Club Championships is for everyone to take part, have fun, and enjoy the experience. There will be some fun team-based events during each session because we believe that swimming should be fun and that feeling part of a bigger team is important.
Further information including entries and eligibility rules can be found on the event website
